MetroTwit v5 packs more features into the slick Windows Twitter app

MetroTwit was one of our favorite new Windows apps of 2010, and the first updates in 2011 have added even more functionality to the already slick Twitter program. For starters, several new URL shortening services have been added, including goo.gl. There's also TwitLonger support for updates you just can't cram into that 140-character limit.

While some users may enjoy MetroTwit's autocomplete and spell check functions, others may not -- so options have been added to disable both in your MetroTwit settings. You can even utilize Proxlet to block unwanted noise from your Twitter stream.

MetroTwit has matured rapidly, and might just be the best Windows Twitter app out there right now, as long as you only need to monitor a single account. It is still considered a beta, though, so don't be totally surprised if you experience the odd bug. MetroTwit is also now available on FileHippo, one of our favorite places to download Windows software. Well done, MetroTwit crew!

Intel to show new technology on Thursday, Light Peak rumors swirl

We know Light Peak is ready, at least in its 10Gbps copper form. We think that Apple will be the first to use it, possibly in a set of new MacBooks. Now, this Thursday, Intel has invited journalists to a San Francisco event, where it will "discuss a new technology that is about to appear on the market" and provide tech demos. There's no hard news here, but things appear to add up, and so the web's ablaze with rumors that Thursday's the day Intel will unveil the finished first generation of its interconnect technology to the world. Here's what happens now: We'll be in San Francisco this Thursday, reporting live from the event, to let you know for sure.

Books Without Borders: A Victory For Amazon, But Also For Independent Book Stores

It?s amazing, isn?t it, the Borders bankruptcy? Not amazing in a fun way - although the idea of a typically perky Borders employee being handed their pink slip does lend itself to mean-spirited satire: ?oh, pink slip, great choice, I?ve been meaning to read that one myself - did you find everything you need today? Fantastic! Do you have a Borders reward card?? No, it?s amazing in a ?woah, how the hell did that happen?? way. It seems like only yesterday that we were cursing Borders for driving local independent bookstores out of business. And yet, this time next month, America?s streets will still be littered with thousands of independent bookstores. Borders stores? Not so much.

Smithsonian Museum will have a video game gallery next year, wants you to vote on what's in it

Nobody tell Roger Ebert, but the Smithsonian Museum has announced plans for a new exhibition, called The Art of Video Games, which will run between March and September next year. Charting the 40-year (now there's a number that will make you feel old in a hurry) evolution of gaming from paddle-based pixel exchanges to sophisticated online multiplayer extravaganzas, this collection of memoirs will focus on the most visually striking and technologically innovative titles. Perhaps knowing how heated debates about video games can get, the Museum has sagely decided to co-opt its audience into the curatorial process -- the second source link below will take you to a voting page where you can select your top 80 games from a shortlist of 240... and of course express your rage at the omission of some obscure title you totally loved late one night in 1995.

PlayStation hackers reportedly able to unban selves, ban others, turn tables

PlayStation hackers reportedly able to unban selves, ban others, turn tables
Just last week Sony said that those found to have hacked their PlayStation 3 consoles would have their PlayStation Network access "terminated permanently." Harsh words that, unsurprisingly, weren't too warmly received by the hacking community. Destructoid is now reporting that not only have those tinkerers found a way to unban themselves, but that they can in turn ban any other console they want. There's apparently a catch, though, with the hackers having to know the unique ID assigned to the other console that they'll be banning, which makes this sound like perhaps the hack is simply swapping a "good" ID onto a "bad" console, but at this point we have no details on the supposed procedure here. Regardless, if some random girl with a cute avatar hits you up on IM and, after a few minutes of casual conversation, asks you for the serial number on your PS3, think twice before handing over those digits.

Update: We were a little leery about this given Destructoid's lack of a source, and thanks to a note from reader Omega we now have what looks to be the actual source -- indeed this all is sounding rather theoretical.

Chinese Factory Workers Ask Apple for Respect and an Apology [Apple]

Chinese factory workers have sent a letter to Steve Jobs and Apple hoping that the company will take notice of the harsh working conditions of factories and apologize to the workers for exposing workers to hexyl hydride, also called n-hexane. Hexyl hydride causes "sweaty hands and feet, sudden numbness in hands, swelling and pain in the feet, tiredness and faintness." Daily exposure, such as what the workers faced, has long-term and possibly irreversible nerve damage. More »

Imperfect Balance is a classic physics time waster

imperfectbalance
Imperfect Balance is a very simple game: You have a bunch of blocks on a "stage" in the middle of the screen, and your goal is to make them all fall off.

You do this by using other blocks: There are several blocks you can use on each level; you pick a block and rotate it using A and D (or W and S for finer angles). Once you have it at the angle you want, simply click to drop it. It's not an easy game, despite being simple. You need to drop the right block at the right angle and at the right location -- sometimes that's trivial, but it can be quite daunting too.

The soundtrack is somewhat on the eerie side, but it's not too irritating. All in all, there are certainly worse ways to kill a few minutes.

Mobile Payments Startup Square Ups The Ante, Drops Transaction Fee For Businesses

Mobile payments company Square has made an interesting move today, which should put competitors Verifone and Intuit on notice. The startup is dropping the per transaction charge for any business using its mobile payments device and service. Square previously charged 2.75% of each transaction amount plus a flat $0.15 per transaction fee. Today, Square is completely dropping the per transaction charge. So why is the mobile payments company dropping the transaction fee? Square's General Manager Keith Rabois says that along with simplifying the payments experience for businesses, it is also taking on the hidden fees and teaser rate structure that have plagued the credit card industry. "The vision of Square is to simplify create zero friction and complexity around payments, which is difficult to do in financial services," he explains. Rabois says that the per transaction fees on top of a variable rate charge can be misleading for businesses because the hidden costs add up especially if a business processes a large amount of transactions. Now, Square will simply charge a flat 2.75% of all transactions, regardless of size. "In the end accepting payments should be as easy as using a microwave," says Rabois.

How Hacking Facebook Got This Man Hired... By Facebook [History]

Back in 2005, Chris Putnam needed a hobby. The one he settled on, a series of Facebook hacks and pranks—including one that made your profile page look like MySpace—ended up scoring him a job at the very company he targeted. So maybe GeoHot's just been after Sony's generous benefits package? Check out his full story here: [Quora via Business Insider] More »
